Welcome To 7th and 8th
Grade
History! Summer 2010
8th Grade
Religion: We study the history and
traditions of the Catholic
Church. We explore moral development as appropriate to
the Catholic way of life. We employ the use of our text
(Blest Are We), the Bible, and other miscellaneous
activities approved by the Catholic Church. We read and
discuss "How to Read Your Bible" and the book of Genesis in
the Catholic Church's New American Bible (8A students are
not required to bring their own Bible to class as we have a
complete classroom set). Our class completes a variety of
activities and many divergent discussions which provide each of us
with further insight into who we are and how we individually and
communally relate with our Church. 8A always
is conducting an on-going food-drive to aid St. Leo's Food
Connection!
8th Grade US
History: classes investigate reasons for
conflict, its outcome, and an ever-changing society through a
variety of classroom discussions, lectures, worksheets, text
readings, poems, maps, political cartoons, and
documentaries. Common themes and concepts explored
throughout the last year shall be pulled together, particularly
those regarding eliminating prejudice and increasing tolerance,
forgiveness, and Christian love.
8th Grade Summer
Reading
Students entering the 8th Grade are to read the
classic novel: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty
Smith. We shall employ the book
in a variety ways throughout the 2010-2011 school
year. The novel will support curriculum areas to
reinforce and add to critical thinking exercises, movements in US
History such as the Progressive Era and Tenement living at the turn
of the 1800's to 1900's, and social comparisons with present
day. Students are simply to read the book
with good attention. Students should read it with a
dictionary handy to look up archaic words for true understanding of
the novel. They also are encouraged to look up
things they may not understand on the internet (no readers log
or book report is required for this novel). Students will
take a general quiz over the book shortly after the beginning of
school in the Fall. The quiz will cover general topics
from the book, and students will be successful as long as they read
the book with good attention.
7th Grade World
History: classes study world geography,
cultures and religions. We study the United States and
Canada, Latin America, Europe and Russia, Africa, Asia, and
Australia and Oceania. Throughout the year we investigate the
phenomena that cause social and political entities to rise and
fall, and observe how common themes regarding cultural exchange,
economics, conflict, religion, technology, environment, and etc.
affect the scope of human activity and resulting impact upon our
world.
7th Grade Summer Reading:
Please read At Her Majesty's Request: An African Princess in
Victorian England
by Walter Dean Myers.
Students are to read the book with good attention.
It will be used in a number of ways in the coming year to
supplement understanding of such concepts and isssues of
monarchies, colonialism, and slavery (students are not
required to complete a readers log of report for this
book). There will be a general quiz over the book after the
beginning of school (students will achieve well as long as they
read).
A statement of Classroom Expectations for all 8A classes is
available for download on the "documents" section of this
webpage.
A list of school supplies for each grade (scroll to the bottom of
list for the 8th grade) is on the "documents" section of this
webpage (8A students are not required to bring their
own Bible as we have a classroom
set).
God Bless!
