The
5th Grade Life Skills Curriculum is primarily concerned
with personal growth in areas that are of immediate concern for
children ages 10 and 11. Through the use of a variety of
sources (books, articles, websites, videos and each other), the
course challenges them to use reflection and discussion as a means
to communicate their ideas and questions about the related
topics. There are four main themes addressed in the 12
week session:
The theme of the Life Skills class is
“Understanding Ourselves and Others.” Many of the
readings, class activities, and discussions are geared to
increasing students’ self awareness and helping them gain the
information and skills they need to lead healthy and fulfilling
lives. Additional lessons focus on the knowledge and interpersonal
skills that will enable students to be capable and comfortable
interacting in a multicultural community.
