did it happen? How did thirteen squabbling independent American
states unite to become the most dynamic democratic nation on
the face of the earth? This course is about answering that
question. From the colonial period to modern times, we will study
people from all walks of life who worked and struggled
to determine whether a nation based on the revolutionary
principle of "government of the people, by the people, for
the people" would live up to its promise of liberty and justice for
all.
